Managing the Electrical Side of Bespoke Projects
As part of her role in the electrical team, Lucy oversees the allocation of resources to various ongoing projects. Each project at Labman is completely unique, requiring bespoke electrical design and attention to detail. At the start of each project, the team dives into the design phase, ensuring that every system is customised to meet the specific needs of the task at hand. This involves developing data sheets and manuals to ensure proper wiring, with careful consideration given to every component before the system is even built.
Once the design phase is complete, the team moves forward with constructing the system, followed by running the cables back through. It’s a comprehensive process that ensures our machines meet the highest standards of functionality and safety.
A Day in the Life of Lucy
Every day at Labman combines technical precision and teamwork, with the electrical team playing a key role. We spent a day with Lucy to see what she gets up to on a regular day.
Each week kicks off with an all-staff meeting to align on project updates and goals. At each workstation, the team focus on safety validation, ensuring systems meet ISO 13849 standards through testing and risk assessments. Once safety checks are signed off, a validation document is created to guide further checks.
The team also conducts pre-delivery electrical reviews to ensure systems are safe to power up and prevent any damage. If necessary, periodic electrical reviews are carried out throughout the build. Finally, a Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) review ensures that the system aligns with the original electrical drawings before it’s handed over to the client.
Beyond the Wires
Before joining Labman, Lucy completed a degree in forensic science, but her passion for technology and problem-solving led her to switch paths. She is now finishing her degree in electronic engineering, further developing her expertise in the field.
In addition to her technical work, Lucy also takes the lead in fostering a vibrant team culture. She manages the clubs and societies at Labman, helping to organise employee events like the Labfest summer party and the Sausagefest Christmas party. Her involvement in team-building activities helps create a supportive and enjoyable work environment, ensuring that Labman is not just a place of work, but a place where people thrive and grow.
Conclusion
Lucy’s contributions to Labman go beyond her electrical expertise. She is a key player in ensuring our projects are delivered safely and successfully, while also helping to cultivate a positive and collaborative team culture. Whether it’s designing bespoke electrical systems or organising events that bring the team together, Lucy is integral to Labman’s continued success.
